Elevator Pitch
The Asteroid Foundation is the custodian of Asteroid Day, the United Nations-designated day chosen to inspire the world about the science, opportunities, and risks of asteroids. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the Tunguska impact in 1908. The Luxembourg-based Asteroid Foundation leads efforts to host educational events about space and asteroids worldwide and works closely with various schools, educational institutions, and organisations to connect them to our network of astronauts, scientists, and space experts.
Problem Solved
Asteroid Foundation is preparing the ground for the future of education, innovation, and space exploration. In today’s fast-evolving world of science, technology, and space exploration, captivating the imagination of our youth is nothing short of paramount. The Asteroid Foundation’s programme stands as a compelling catalyst that sparks the curiosity of young minds and ignites their passion for STEAM disciplines. It is about more than just knowledge; it is about aspiration. Through direct, face-to-face interactions with inspiring science leaders and astronauts, our project opens up a world of possibilities that extends far beyond the pages of textbooks.
Solution / Technology
To inspire and engage the younger generation in space and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, the Foundation undertakes the following programmes: Asteroid Day is a Public information and educational programme that aims to empower independent organisers worldwide to host Asteroid Day events. We support them with a range of valuable resources, including educational articles, lesson plans suitable for diverse age groups, asteroid-related videos, newsletters, media platforms, event ideas, and toolkits. SpaceConnectsUs: A year-long series of engaging events, where we introduce students to astronauts, scientists, and space professionals across partner countries through physical and virtual events.
Two main events around Asteroid Day (on the 27 and 28 of June 2025 at Cercle Cité)
Asteroid Day Space Lecture: will focus on engaging master’s and PhD students from space-focused programs. This year, experts from space organisations will present real-world case studies on space missions, followed by Q&A sessions where students can engage with industry professionals. The event will conclude with a networking session featuring elevator pitches from experts in the field, offering insights into various career paths within the space sector. This session will also be streamed to space-focused universities in Europe, expanding the reach of the event across the continent.
Asteroid Day Festival: Open to the general public, this day will cater to children, students, parents, teachers, and anyone interested in Space. A diverse range of activities will be offered, from interactive workshops co-hosted by key partners and teaching about space science in a hands-on manner to presentations and discussion panels that will be streamed to the global audience of Asteroid Day.
Market Size
In 2024, our in-person events in Luxembourg attracted a significant turnout of over 2100 attendees. Additionally, the event stream on YouTube garnered over 2500 views. Moreover, we are pleased to report that Asteroid Day independently-organised events are hosted in more than 125 countries worldwide.
